A quick progress update…

It has been about four weeks since I enrolled on the Art of Photography course and I wanted to say a few things about my progress. I plan on doing this on a monthly basis, just to review what is going well and what is not.

Before I enrolled, I thought that I would immediately make a start on the practical aspects of the course and put the reading and research on hold for as long as possible. However, quite the opposite has been the case.

After reading through the course materials, I felt that my work would benefit from some time spent focusing on the elements that are new (and scary!) to me. That is the academic stuff. And so, I have been reading (both from the reading list and material of my own choosing) plus taking notes. I now have a growing collection of bookmarked websites, blogs and other online bits and pieces. Also have a few trips to galleries and exhibitions planned for later in the summer. This all feels positive and I am pleased with my progress in this respect, as I was quite anxious that I would procrastinate and not pick up a book until the end of the course.

On to the negatives…

My aim when starting the course was (and still is) to study for around twenty hours per week. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, this has so far been more like ten. There has been quite a lot of upheaval lately, which should calm down over the coming weeks, whereby I can increase my hours. To name a few culprits: my boyfriend has been finishing moving in with me. I have had numerous appointments to attend. My wheelchair has had a mind of its own this week due to a collapsed bearing, resulting in difficulty with getting around until repaired. And I have had to rest a lot due to a minor yet painful injury that occurred last week.

The practical exercises have been neglected as a result of all this. My tutor suggested a deadline for assignment 1 for the end of June, which will most likely need an extension of a week or two now. As soon as my chair is repaired, I can start tackling the exercises (waiting on parts, but hopefully at the beginning of next week). I have written notes on what I plan to do, where and how, so it is now just a case of actually getting it done. I thought I was prepared for assignment one also, but keep changing my mind. Tempted to do something indoors, so that rain won’t cause any further delay.

Oh, finally, I have two learning log entries to make soon. Hopefully I can decipher my notes! One will focus on thoughts that I have had inspired by reading, the other will be an artist study on Brooke Shaden.

That is about all there is to report on my progress (and lack thereof!)

 

 

Book Review – Behind the Image: Research in Photography

This book by Anna Fox and Natasha Caruana is the third in the Basics Creative Photography range, and is included on the essential reading list. I am pleased that this was the first from the list that I read, as it follows on nicely from the Introduction to Studying in HE course which is available on the OCA’s student website.

The book is, as the range suggests, basic. This is something that I liked about it. For someone like me, who has not studied anything academic since my teens, this was a nice and gentle introduction to doing so.  The size and layout are perfect for easing back into study. A downside to this is that the content does have a tendency to state the obvious. Another is that for the nearly £19 spent on its purchase, I don’t feel that I have learnt a great deal.

Each of the six chapters begin with a short introduction and conclude with a case study and activity for the reader to complete. This breaks the book up and encourages reflection, rather than simply reading through and not pausing for thought. I do intend on completing several of the activities, although one or two require a little too much time that I would rather be spending on the AoP course material itself.

The first chapter, for me, was the most useful. It covered the importance of a good research proposal and how this can be beneficial to both the development and structure of a project, as well the ways in which an advanced proposal can help with applications for funding or gaining entry to locations with restricted access. These are all things that I have not previously considered.

This chapter also touches on being informed about photographic history, practice and theory. This section inspired some research, and I now have a nice little list of books I aim to read, plus galleries and exhibitions that I plan to visit (A History of Photography at the V&A seems to be a good starting point).

While reading chapter two, Developing Ideas Through Research, I had a number of thoughts about my own photography up to this point. Mostly that it has always lacked research and because of this I feel that it lacks meaning. These thoughts continued in chapter three, Practice as Research:

“It is easy to just shoot photographs and not record what you do, yet if you stop for a moment and consider the significance of how you are photographing – when, where, why, with which tools and what assistance – it all starts to become part of an interesting research story” (p.61).

I will speak further about this reflection in a separate learning log entry.

The first few pages in chapter four (Compiling Your Research), which focused on sketchbooks and blogging were insightful. Several links to blogs were provided (two of which have changed but I was redirected, one is now an archive), so I had a quick look at those and bookmarked them for more in-depth reading in the future.

Chapters five (Research and Practice) and six (The Impact of Research) served to further highlight how I have neglected research in my photography:

“By making time to be more aware of both the research process and its influences you have more scope to reflect on your working process and apply this knowledge to future work” (p.144).

This book has definitely inspired me to create more meaningful images and record my process, but I do feel like the essential reading list should suggest that it be read at the beginning of the Art of Photography course, as I imagine that further down the line it would feel too simple.

 

Review – The Concept (show/programme).

While doing some research for a future learning log entry, I stumbled upon an online series called The Concept.

The Concept is hosted by fine art photographer Brooke Shaden and fashion photographer Lindsay Adler and can be found on The Framed Network’s Youtube channel. In the beginning of each of the six episodes, Brooke and Lindsay are given an envelope which contains a concept represented by a single word, along with one of their names. The named photographer selects a location for a photoshoot inspired by the concept. The remainder of the episode follows them developing, executing and then reflecting on their ideas and process.

I particularly enjoyed this series because Brooke and Lindsay have entirely different styles, so approached each concept uniquely. Where as Lindsay’s interpretations were quite literal, Brooke was more metaphorical. Their differing styles were also highlighted when selecting a location. Lindsay prefers shooting in a studio, using artificial lighting, where as Brooke prefers to shoot outdoors, using available light. So inevitably, in each episode, one of the photographers has to overcome the challenges of being out of their comfort zone when the location is chosen.

There was quite a lot of talking in each episode, which, judging from the viewers comments, was not widely appreciated. However, I found it insightful for the most part. For example, hearing about the differences between working for a client or not. In episode 5, Brooke had selected an outdoor location. This presented a problem for Lindsay as it was raining very heavily and the dress that her model was wearing cost thousands of dollars and was not allowed to get wet. However, she adapted well, finding a covered area and using various props to shelter the model from the rain. Usually, in such a situation, she commented that the photoshoot would most likely be moved to an indoor location, as in the field of fashion photography, there are a lot of people involved in the shoot, so rearranging is not possible. I noticed this throughout, that the coverage of Lindsay’s process always entailed an entourage of people where as Brooke uses her own time and her own wardrobe, so the model is the only other person involved, and even then, she often opts for self-portrait.

Something that I would have liked to see more of in the episodes is the post-processing. There was the occasional reference of something that might be changed or added later in photoshop, but no footage or details about what exactly was done, which in all of Brooke’s images (and at least a few of Lindsay’s), was clearly quite a substantial amount.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and unexpected find.
